Alicia Vikander and Andrew Lincoln to star in ‘The Lady from the Sea’ at the Bridge Theatre

Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander, who hasn’t appeared on stage in 17 years, will play Ellida and Andrew Lincoln will play Edward in Ibsen’s play about a woman’s fight for autonomy.
Alicia Vikander and Andrew Lincoln will star in a new production of The Lady from the Sea written and directed by Simon Stone after Henrik Ibsen. Performances will begin at the Bridge Theatre this September.

Academy Award winner Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina, Tomb Raider), who hasn’t appeared on stage in 17 years, will play Ellida and Lincoln (Love Actually, A Christmas Carol, Old Vic) will play Edward in Ibsen’s play about a woman’s fight for autonomy in her relationship.

Vikander said: “I’m so excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Simon and Andrew. Ibsen was one of the first playwrights I was introduced to, and his plays have always spoken to me on a deeply personal level, so it felt right that The Lady from the Sea should be my theatre debut. As a long admirer of Simon’s work and his unique vision, I can’t wait for him to bring this play to life.”

Lincoln added: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Bridge Theatre with The Lady from the Sea this Autumn. Simon Stone’s Yerma with Billie Piper and the rest of the astonishing cast was one of the greatest plays I’ve seen in years and reminded me of why I became an actor. So to be able to be back on stage alongside Alicia Vikander, with Simon’s direction, writing and all-round brilliance was too irresistible an opportunity to miss.”

Simon Stone, an Australian theatre and film director known for his radical reimaginings of Yerma at the Young Vic and Phaedra at the National Theatre, makes his debut at the Bridge Theatre. He said: “I’m over the moon to have found a new London home in the beautiful Bridge Theatre. The space is exhilarating, versatile, incredibly intimate.

“Alicia was born to play this role. She grew up watching Ibsen in his original language. His myths course through her veins. She’s totally mesmerising to watch inhabit a character. The truth emanates from her. At a young age she’s already built an impressive career of emotionally and physically astonishing performances. Theatre audiences now have the chance to soak up that unique talent live.

“I’ve been a fan of Andrew since I was a teenager. His effortless emotional access; the ugly truth underneath his handsome, charming exterior; the vulnerability that he’s willing to let us watch, thereby transforming itself into awe-inspiring strength. Open, raw, honest: my kind of actor.”

The Lady from the Sea follows Ellida, who fears she may have settled for a comfortable life with her husband Edward, a well-off doctor. When a lover from her past appears, she must choose between the life she has built and the one she left behind.

Further casting is to be announced.

The Lady From the Sea will play from 10 September to 8 November.

Alicia Vikander will lead Rachel Rose’s debut film “The Last Day” alongside Victoria Pedretti and Wagner Moura.

The film, which wrapped production in New York in October, follows a writer and mother who confronts her lack of creative purpose and embarks on a journey of rediscovering herself after encountering figures from her past.

“The Last Day” is produced by Lucie Elwes, Rose, Mason Plotts, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon of Killer Films — the production company behind last year’s “Past Lives” and “May December” — as well as David Kaplan of Kaplan Morrison (“The Brutalist”). Maja Hoffmann and Lucas Hoffmann of Luma Projects serve as executive producers.
CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group co-represent North American rights on “The Last Day.”
Vikander is an Oscar-winning actor whose credits include “The Danish Girl,” “Ex Machina” and “Tomb Raider.” This year she starred alongside Cate Blanchett and Charles Dance in the political satire “Rumours,” as well as “The Assessment” opposite Elizabeth Olsen. Next up she’ll be seen in the Korean thriller “Hope” and Oliver Assayas’ “The Wizard of the Kremlin.”

Pedretti played Nell Crain in the 2018 Netflix miniseries “The Haunting of Hill House,” and she also starred as Love Quinn opposite Penn Badgley “You.” Her film credits include “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Shirley” and “Origin.” She’ll next be seen in Esteban Arango’s “Ponyboi.”

Moura is best known for taking on the role of Pablo Escobar in the Netflix drug drama “Narcos,” which landed him a Golden Globe nomination. Ron Howard’s Survival Thriller ‘Origin Of Species’ Lines Up Starry Cast With Ana De Armas, Jude Law, Alicia Vikander & Daniel Brühl

EXCLUSIVE: We told you about Ron Howard’s survival thriller Origin of Species last fall and the project now has a killer cast with Oscar nominee Ana De Armas (No Time To Die), Oscar nominee Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes) and Golden Globe nominee Daniel Brühl (All Quiet On The Western Front) attached and Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider) in talks to join.

Howard’s Imagine Entertainment are behind the buzz project with CAA Media Finance and Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios, the latter which is newly aboard to finance and will be selling at the upcoming Cannes market.

Shoot is being lined up for Q4, 2023, in Queensland, Australia. Script comes from Noah Pink (Tetris).

Based on two different accounts of the same true story, the film is being described as an “a darkly comic tale of murder and survival, set around a group of eclectic characters who abandon civilization for the Galapagos. They are all searching for the answer to that ever-pressing question that plagues us all: what is the meaning of life.

This is the latest big package to hit the Cannes market, which despite the strike is looking like a trove of opportunity for buyers. Those with scripts further along — and the completed films in the festival —could be even more desirable with holes opening up in schedules due to the strike delaying some projects.
